How to Write the Perfect CV to Land Your Dream Fitness Job

By Madeline Cummings, Recruitment Director, Love Recruitment

In the fitness industry, your CV is your first opportunity to impress. It’s your chance to show potential employers why you’re the ideal fit for their team. Whether you're a personal trainer, studio manager, or aspiring group exercise instructor, crafting a standout CV is crucial to landing your dream fitness job. Here’s how to make your CV shine and put you ahead of the competition.

1. Start Strong with a Clear Personal Statement

Your CV should begin with a concise and compelling personal statement. This is your elevator pitch—a snapshot of who you are, what you bring to the table, and what you’re looking for. Avoid clichés like “I’m a hard worker” or “I’m passionate about fitness.” Instead, focus on specifics. For example:

“I am a Level 3 Personal Trainer with five years of experience helping clients achieve their fitness goals. With a track record of increasing member retention and a passion for delivering exceptional customer service, I am seeking a role as a Fitness Manager where I can lead and inspire a team.”

2. Tailor Your CV to the Role

Generic CVs rarely stand out. Research the company and the specific job you’re applying for, then tailor your CV accordingly. Highlight the skills and experience that align with the role. If the job emphasises group training expertise, for example, make sure your experience leading classes is front and centre.

3. Showcase Your Achievements

Employers want to see results. Rather than listing responsibilities, focus on achievements. Did you increase client satisfaction scores? Grow membership numbers? Develop a new fitness programme? Quantify your successes whenever possible:

“Increased gym memberships by 20% over a 12-month period through innovative marketing campaigns and exceptional service delivery.”

4. Highlight Relevant Qualifications

The fitness industry is qualification-heavy, and your CV should reflect your credentials. List key certifications such as Level 2 Fitness Instructor, Level 3 Personal Trainer, or any specialist qualifications like yoga, Pilates, or strength training. Include details about first aid training and relevant CPD (Continuing Professional Development).

5. Keep It Concise and Well-Organised

Your CV should be no more than two pages. Use clear headings, bullet points, and plenty of white space to make it easy to read. Structure it as follows:

  • Contact Details: Include your name, phone number, email address, and LinkedIn profile (if relevant).
  • Personal Statement
  • Key Skills: List skills relevant to the role, such as “Exceptional Leadership,” “Class Programming,” or “Customer Retention.”
  • Work Experience: Start with your most recent role and work backwards.
  • Qualifications and Certifications
  • Hobbies and Interests: Optional, but great if relevant to fitness.

6. Show Your Passion for Fitness

Employers want to know that you live and breathe fitness. Mention hobbies, volunteer work, or personal accomplishments that showcase your passion. Are you training for a marathon? Do you teach fitness classes in your spare time? Let your enthusiasm shine through.

7. Proofread Thoroughly

Typos and errors are a no-go. Ask a trusted friend or colleague to proofread your CV, or use tools like Grammarly to ensure your document is polished.

8. Finish with a Strong Cover Letter

A great CV should always be accompanied by an engaging cover letter. This is your chance to expand on why you’re the perfect candidate and demonstrate your enthusiasm for the role.

At Love Recruitment, we’re passionate about helping fitness professionals find roles where they can thrive. By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to creating a CV that lands you your dream job.
